April 2008, Regarding the Turkey-Pacific Islands Ministers
of Foreign Affairs meeting in Istanbul. (Unofficial Translation)
The Turkey-Pacific Islands Ministers of Foreign Affairs
meeting hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan will be
convened in Istanbul on 9-11 April 2008 with the aim to develop
Turkey`s relations with countries in the South Pacific region and
to strengthen cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral
levels.
The sixteen full member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum,
the most important regional organisation encompassing the states
in the region, have been invited to the meeting. The Cook Islands,
the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Samoa, Fiji, Palau, Micronesia, Kiribati,
Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu will be represented
at Ministerial level and the others at the level of high representative.
At the Conference, which is of special importance for being the
first to be held in Turkey with the participation of Foreign Ministers
of the Pacific Islands, the topics of social and economic development,
development assistance, climate change and its effects, coping with
natural disasters, as well as tourism will be taken up, in the context
of possibilities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
