Architecture
Early Turkish architecture that took shape during the first five
years of the Republic was the expression of a selective style inspired
by the classical period of Ottoman architecture in particular and
it included first-generation architects graduated from the schools
of architecture established during the late Ottoman period. However,
during the construction of public buildings, one of the most urgent
requirements of the day, all over the country and especially in
Ankara between 1928 until the end of World War II, a contemporary
and international architectural style developed as a result of the
contributions from architects who studied in Berlin and Vienna.

Today, there is an ongoing exploration
to shape a new national architectural movement following a period
of rapid urbanization that began in the early 1980s and resulted
in a process which completely ignored architects and architecture.
Fundamental problems of Turkish architecture were discussed at the
International Union of Architects (UIA) XXII. World Architecture
Congress hosted by the Turkish Union of Architects under the theme
of “Grand Bazaar of Architectures” in Istanbul in 2005.
This gathering of unprecedented proportions gave the Turkish architects
the opportunity to meet with their colleagues from all over the
world and it is considered to constitute an important axis of development
for Turkish architecture.
